The fundamental principles guiding our work are universally recognised human rights and basic principles like human dignity, solidarity and social justice. The approach of Justice and Peace is to link the knowledge and expertise of our partners, whether they are Human Rights Defenders or organisations, religious leaders or institutions, or change makers working for local and national authorities or companies, with a rights-based approach. We simultaneously support the development of local and international strategies for change, and implement these strategies together with our partners. One of these strategies involves the support of Human Rights Defenders and their organisations with evidencebased policy influencing at the local, regional and international level. We support Human Rights Defenders at the grassroots level by creating and effectively using policy influencing opportunities at the United Nations (UN) (Geneva, New York and regional offices), the International Criminal Court (ICC), the European Union (EU), Council of Europe (CoE), national and local authorities and influential private actors. OJPE is an organisation in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (UN), has participatory status with the Council of Europe and is a member of the Human Rights and democracy network (EU level).

Every person has a right to a dignified life/existence, irrespective of religion, belief, political opinion, race, gender, sexual orientation or marital status. Justice and Peace seeks a just and sustainable world where people are protected by universal human rights, while the fairer distribution of wealth and equality of opportunity is ensured.

Our vision is a just and sustainable world where the inherent dignity of all members of the human family is acknowledged, human rights are respected and social justice is maintained, and all persons are free to develop themselves, lead a meaningful life and are active contributors to their own well-being as well as their community.

Our mission is to improve access to social, economic and environmental justice by supporting the work of and providing protection of human rights defenders.
